WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our Wirral Globe Camera Club group.

This week, we’re looking at Ron Thomas’ favourite photographs that were taken in Wirral, with his back garden proving a haven for wildlife.

Ron, who lives in Birkenhead, was inspired to take up photography after reading a book in the 1950s and he’s been a member of Birkenhead Photographic Association for nearly 50 years.

When and why did you take up photography?

As a child in the 1950s, I was inspired by a four volume encyclopaedia called The World of the Children. Taking pictures was a way to record, learn and understand how the world works.

What do you love about taking pictures?

I love finding out about people, objects and history as well as plants, animals and insect. My membership of Birkenhead Photographic Association - one of the oldest camera clubs in the UK - has been a joy for me since 1974. I have seen so many changes in the way images are created and enjoyed, including the intricate process of producing fine art prints produced by traditional chemical means to the very latest computer-generated imagery via text prompts. Image-making is constantly evolving and it is great to be a part of that.

Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?

I like to photograph planet Earth but I have developed an interest in astro photography. As my front door faces south, I can see, and try to photograph, other planets as they pass by. My wildlife images are mainly from the UK, but I have been further afield.

What is your favourite subject matter and why?

I photograph the natural world for many reasons but I am concerned about the way that humankind has been treating the biosphere. Man has not been a responsible custodian of the natural world and if I can, even in a very small way, inform and inspire others, then I would feel quite positive.

What do you enjoy about being part of the Wirral Globe Camera Club?

It is always good to see what other image makers are producing. I like to see what inspires them and looking at the world through the eyes of others is very rewarding.
