I am in favour of 20 mph speed limits, if they help protect children and reduce accidents.
However, I am not a fan of the piece-meal approach Wirral council has taken, by enforcing 20 mph randomly.
There is a lot of evidence on the internet that the level of harmful pollutants from exhausts increases when vehicles accelerate.
Going from 20mph to 30 mph means vehicles will have to accelerate, with these actions multiplying when there are multiple speed limit changes.
Surely it makes sense to utilise the 20mph limit where it is more likely to contribute to child safety and reduce pollution.
In my opinion, all residential roads should be 20mph, which means drivers will know exactly what speed they should maintain in such areas.
Make “B” roads 30mph and ensure children are educated about the use of crossings and follow the rules.
Make “A” roads 30 mph and above depending on the type of road (single or dual carriageway), but avoid mixed speed limits.
Multiple changes in speed limits on interconnecting roads lead to people speeding.
Incidentally as well as driving a car and a motorcycle, I cycle, and on my cycle trips around the Wirral, I’m afraid the 20 mph limits introduced seem to be getting ignored by many drivers.
Let's be honest, placed as they are, randomly, they are unenforceable.
