WIRRAL teams have played their first British Parks Senior County games of the season.

On a miserablbly cold afternoon on Sunday, the Wallasey Association team won their game against Cheshire by a 19-12 aggregate in a match that was definitely a "game of two halves".

The home team playing on the Quarry Vikings green had a resounding 11-1 victory, Geoff Lynch and Tommy Walker starring with 21-05 and 21-06 wins.

However the away leg on the Great Moor S&S green was quite a different story.

The first eight all lost and it was only a valiant fight back by the back four that saved the day; vital wins for Neil Sherbrooke, John Lloyd and the captain, Frank O’Neill gave the team the points needed for their overall victory.

In their British Parks match the Birkenhead and District team were playing North Staffordshire.

They won their home match on the green at Tixall Bowling Club by a score of 8-6 however they narrowly lost the away leg and this meant that overall they suffered an 18-13 defeat.

In the home leg there were excellent 21-10 wins for two Gladstone players, Nick Burridge and Jon Ellis; while in the away leg the outstanding performance was by another Gladstone player James Whalley, who had a really excellent 21-07 win.

At the same time the Junior Wirral County team was also playing a team from North Staffordshire but unfortunately the team from the Midlands proved to be just too strong for the local players and the Juniors fell to a very heavy defeat.

At home there was a good 21-18 win for Jordan McElney and in the away leg the best performance was by Robert Rogers who posted a 21-12 victory.

The day before, Wirral Junior Merit Tournament was played on the green at the Pensby Bowling Club. There was a good turnout of 29 players and at the end of the day the deserved winner was Ray Anderson who beat Josh Bunting in the final.

Results: Semi-final: Ray Anderson 21, Ryan Walters 18; Josh Bunting 21, Daniel Jeffries 06. Final: Anderson 21, Bunting 13.

The Wallasey Association is now holding its Team Cup Finals on Thursday evening and in the first of these, a good-sized crowd saw the Bronze Bowling Club deservedly win the Association Cup beating Royden Hall at Manor Road.

Though Royden won three of the first four blocks, Bronze fought back and with seven winners overall their captain, Stan Weir, was able to receive the cup from association president Keith Etches.

The best performance for Bronze was a 21-05 win for Bob Evans while Royden’s John Leece won his game 21-06.
