CALDY lost their latest Premiership Cup match 19-43 at home to Doncaster Knights but it was a very entertaining game at Paton Field.
It was Caldy who took the early advantage when Scotland under 20 international Will Robinson drove through to score under the posts.
Doncaster responded quickly when they beat Caldy at the line out and after a few good phases Morgan Strong finished under the posts.
Caldy hit back scoring a second try after a maul on the five metre line saw Matt Gallagher score in the corner.
The weather in the first half made it difficult for free flowing rugby from both sides until Zack Kerr broke the stalemate five minutes before the interval with a third try for the Yorkshire side.
The game was even in the first quarter of the second half but turned in Doncaster’s favour on 50 minutes when Caldy’s Nathan Rushton was sent to the sin bin and the visitors took advantage of the extra man.
A try from Tom Currie came quickly after the start of the sin bin period after a quick tap and go from a penalty.
The bonus point try quickly followed after some fantastic work in the midfield was finished off by Jordan Olowofella to the delight of those who’d made the difficult journey across the Pennines.
Doncaster’s dominance showed as chances came and only a few mistimed passes stopped Knights from extending their lead.
With fifteen minutes left Rokoduguni scored the try the visitors had been looking for and Harry Davey completed Doncaster’s scoring with a fine move with seven minutes remaining.
There was still time for a consolation try from Ollie Hearn.
The cup will return in February for a second round of matches with the knockout matches in March. until then Caldy will look to lift themselves off the bottom of the Championship table with the first game against Harpury College next Saturday. The Gloucester side have won all four previous meetings and are the only team at Championship level that Caldy are yet to beat.
