FOLLOWING the mid-week troubles at Cammell Laird 1907 FC which resulted in the fist team manager Andy Cass resigning his post, Lairds travelled to play Wolverhampton Sporting Community with a much changed team.
Captain Ryan Smith took the role of player manager with support from Ben Graham and Jack Sharpe and they saw the team put in a strong battling performance full of effort and passion as Lairds claimed a 2-2 draw.
Although missing many regular players Lairds played some really good football but failed to take some good openings created by Cameron McGregor and Jamie Leyland and went behind against the run of play from a breakaway that saw the home team take the lead on 35minutes through Connor Fellows during a goalmouth melee.
The second period saw Lairds passing game causing problems for the home team and on 62 minutes a flowing move from Dan Hardman, to Daren Askew who passed wide to Jamie Eaton, who saw his cross finished well by Jamie Leyland to level matters.
Sadly, from the restart a swift break saw Marlow Taylor score at the back post and he put the home team ahead when unchallenged.
Undeterred, Lairds fought back well and Jack Kelly was unlucky with a headed effort and Jamie Eaton hit the bar when cutting in from the wing, but the same player produced a telling cross which was diverted into the net for the equalising goal and the game ended 2-2.
All the players deserved credit for this performance under trying circumstances and the committee thanked them all for a hard working effort that could have resulted in a victory.
Lairds next fixture is at the KRCT Stadium on Saturday 26th October versus top of the table Stafford Town with a 3.00pm kick off.
The Cheshire Senior Cup fixture is to be rearranged some time in early November and there is no fixture next week.
The reserves are away versus Altrincham in the Cheshire Amateur Cup on Saturday 19th with a 2.00pm kick off.
The U-23s will have a home fixture at the KRCT Stadium versus Maghull with a 3pm kick off.
The U-23's league fixture in the West Cheshire 3rd division saw them lose a nine-goal thriller against Sutton Rangers despite Kyle McGregor bagging a great brace and Michael Dobbs and Jack Gordon finding the net as they lost 4-5 in a great tussle played in terrible conditions.
