TWO more well taken goals by Jamie Eaton saw Cammell Laird 1907 FC secure top spot in the North West Counties First Division South as they overcame a battling Runcorn Town to secure a 5-1 victory with an excellent team performance.
Early exchanges were fairly even though Lairds had the better chances, but they had to wait until the 25th minute when a solo effort from Eaton opened the scoring. They increased the lead when Josh Henry netted in added time of the first half for a 2-0 lead at the interval.
The second half started brightly for Lairds as Matty Beaman scored at the far post in the 49th minute and Eaton collected his second goal two minutes later as they punished their visitors defence. Lairds were now totally dominant and peppered Towns goal at will, but had to wait until the 66th minute before captain Ryan Smith added the fifth goal.
Town did rally and scored a consolation effort in the 72nd minute through Jamie Apperley and even wasted two more efforts in the closing minutes, but Lairds also had further opportunities to increase their lead in their best performance so far. Reece Oliver, Ben Graham and Nathan Johnston had excellent games in a worthy team effort that deserved the three points.
Lairds next fixture is away to new team Shawbury United on Saturday, August 10 with a 3pm kick off.
Meanwhile, Lairds U-23 have had a mixed start to their league campaign in the West Cheshire league 3rd Division having lost away to Sefton Park Rangers but winning 1-0 away to West Kirby reserves in their opening two fixtures.
