WIRRAL golfer Matthew Dodd-Berry excelled on his Open debut yesterday (Thursday, July 18),  finishing his opening 18 holes with a one-over par 72.

In difficult conditions at Royal Troon, which saw former champions such as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods struggle, Dodd-Berry began his round in excellent form with a birdie on the first before going on to par six out of his next eight holes.

The amateur, who is at a member at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, is currently the second-lowest amateur in the field, only behind Calum Scott of Scotland.

Dodd-Berry will tee off for his second round at 11.04am today (Friday, July 18) alongside current leader Daniel Brown.

The Northallerton golfer shot a bogey-free 65 with a birdie at the last lifting him to six under, a shot ahead of 2019 champion Shane Lowry.

Another Wirral golfer, Matthew Jordan, finished his first round level on par at 71.
