AN eight-year-old golfer from Wirral has tasted more success after finishing third at the Irish Open.

Buster Airey, who is a member of Heswall Golf Club and attends St Peters C of E Primary School in Heswall, competed in the final round on Wednesday and was presented with his third prize at a presentation that evening which luckily finished in time for him to watch the England vs Netherlands Euros match.

Not only did Buster finish third, but he shot the lowest scoring round of the competition for his category, carding +2 (38).

Over 100 junior golfers from 24 countries around the world qualified to take part in the two day competition run by US Kids Golf at Mount Wolseley Golf Resort in County Carlow, Ireland.

Proud mum, Zoe Airey, said: "This was Buster's first time competing at The Irish Open and to come away with a top three finish is a fantastic achievement.

"Since the World Championships he has continued to work hard with his coach, Jason Dransfield, at Heswall Golf Club. He’s also now sponsored by CEL Solicitors, a people before profit law firm based in Liverpool.

"Buster's school have been super encouraging of him participating in this competition. His teacher Miss Rigby and classmates made a real fuss of him before leaving for Ireland last week and headteacher, Mr Parry, has been very supportive about having time off school."

Buster's next major competition is at the end of July in France, where he will compete at The British Junior Tour’s European Open.
