FIVE Wirral golfers have got a step closer to taking part in The 152nd Open at Royal Troon after making it through to Final Qualifying next week.

15 courses around Great Britain and Ireland played host to almost 2,000 Regional Qualifying hopefuls on Monday, with as many as seven places up for grabs at some of the venues.

Stephen Croman (Leasowe), Cameron Walker (Caldy), Steven Capper (Royal Liverpool), Matthew Dodd-Berry (Royal Liverpool) and Joseph Sephton (Wallasey) will all fight for a place at the iconic tournament. 

A total of 288 golfers will compete in Final Qualifying with a minimum of 16 places available into The 152nd Open at Royal Troon.
 
The successful qualifiers will tee it up at the famous Ayrshire links when the Championship is held there from 14-21 July.

Final Qualifying will be staged at four venues across England and Scotland – West Lancashire, Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, Burnham & Berrow in Somerset and Royal Cinque Ports in Kent – on Tuesday, July 2.

A spokesperson for Caldy Golf Club, said: "On behalf of everyone here at Caldy, we would like to extend our congratulations to one of our young members, Cameron Walker, who was one of seven players to qualify for Final Qualifying in yesterday's Regional Qualifier.

"Cam shot an incredible 69 (-3), finishing in a tie for second place and clinching a spot in Final Qualifying. 

"Cameron, we wish you all the best of luck in the next stage on the road to The Open and can't wait to come and cheer you on."
