A WOMEN'S football team from Wirral are celebrating after achieving a unique league and cup double.

Wirral Phoenix Women, who play their matches at Pensby High Sports Complex, recently finished top of the Liverpool Women's & Youth Football League Division One, meaning they will now be promoted to Tier 6 of women’s football, the North West Regional League, to face off against teams such as Chester FC Women, Macclesfield FC and Runcorn Linnets.

The side then followed that up with winning the league cup following a 5-1 victory over Ashton Town Lionesses.

The football club founded in 2020 during the pandemic with the aim to provide opportunities for all women and girls in football across Wirral.

Manager Adam Wood said: “Last night's performance summed up this season perfectly, battling the elements and pouring rain against a strong Ashton Town side demonstrated the commitment and determination the girls have shown this season.

"It’s a great way to end the year completing the double and we are excited for next year's challenge. We hope to inspire the next generation of girls playing in our football club and on the Wirral.”
