OLYMPIC and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Freya Anderson was among Wirral's sporting achievers honoured for their success.
The Team GB swimmer, from Birkenhead, was named Wirral sportsperson of the year at the Wirral Sports Awards night.
Taking place at Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight, the event was a chance to shine a light on the area's best sporting achievers and unsung heroes who dedicate their time and service to their clubs, leagues and associations.
The prestigious awards evening, celebrating its 58th year, was opened by the Mayor, councillor Jeff Green and hosted by BBC Radio Merseyside's Ian Kennedy.
Also honoured was former Premier League referee and ardent Tranmere Rovers supporter Mike Dean, who picked up the outstanding achievement award.
Young sportsperson of the year was awarded to Patience Wood of Bebington Archers in recognition of her European junior archery performances.
Other awards presented on the night included:
- Club of the year: Wirral Metro Swimming Club.
- Young sports volunteer: Lucy Robinson, Prenton High School.
- Coach of the year: Sarah Kearney, Wirral Endurance Programme.
- Volunteer of the year: Graham Sale, Wallasey Cricket Club.
- Sports PE Department of the year: Prenton High School for Girls.
- Secondary school girls team of the year: Upton Hall Cross Country.
- Secondary boys school team of the year: Calday year nine Football.
- Primary school team of the year: St Georges Wallasey year six Football.
- Active Wirral Individual Award: Angela Dale, Wirral Golf Junior Academy.
- Patience Wood
- Active Wirral Organisation Award: Activity For All.
- Lifetime Achievement: Cathy Page (Birkenhead Trampoline Club) and the late Roy Fisher (Pensby Runners).
Special recognition awards were also passed out to:
- Pauline Roberts, Birkenhead Athletics Club.
- Beth Williamson, Birkenhead Trampoline Club
This year's event was supported by Active Wirral and included headline sponsors Wirral Chamber of Commerce, Stagecoach, Liverpool John Moores University School of Sports Science and Liverpool One who kindly donated vouchers to all the attending schools.
Proceeds from the event go towards the Forum's annual Bursary award scheme that will take place in 2023, hosted by the Mayor of Wirral.
