SEVERAL local teams were involved in round one of the Cheshire Association's Brunner Cup on Saturday.
While Manor Road, Heswall RBL, Hoylake Central and Melrose suffered defeats it is good to be able to report victories for Tixall and Oxton Cons.
Tixall, who are trying to regain the cup they won in both the 2014 and 2015 seasons, beat Comberbach 228-157 on the Runcorn War Memorial green and Oxton beat Wharton Rec 235-180 at the Waverton Institute.
The very popular New Brighton Classic was held last Monday at the New Brighton Cricket and Bowling Club and attracted a good field of 64 players.
The event was won by Leighton Roberts from Wrexham who beat Tixall's Jamie Fitzpatrick in the final.
The two semi-final games were both very close with Roberts just pipping Calum Wraight from Shrewsbury. Fitzpatrick beat the winner from the last two years, New Brighton Queens Royal's Matthew Gilmore.
Roberts had reached the semi-final stage last year but this time he proved to be a little too good for Fitzpatrick in the final and he thoroughly deserved his victory.
Results:
Semi Finals: J. Fitzpatrick 21, M. Gilmore 19; L. Roberts 21, C. Wraight 20. Final: Roberts 21, Fitzpatrick 15.
The Wirral Junior Handicap was played at Royden last Sunday.
The Under 18s was won by Jake McElnay who just pipped last year's winner, Mark Wood, 21-19, after a great game.
The Under 14s was won, for the fourth time, by Michael Cavanagh who beat Finley Hormbrey, 21-18, in another close game.
The Wirral Junior Pairs is a week on Sunday, May 27 and will be held at Birkenhead Park.
This is a reminder about the bowls coaching sessions which are held each Saturday morning in Birkenhead Park.
The sessions are free of charge and run from 10.00am to midday.
