BEN Jones sprung Paton Field into ecstasy as he confirmed a special 21-20 win in the last play of the game against Birmingham Moseley.

Jones, having not been at his best off the tee, stepped up to complete an unlikely win after a first half of flat and ineffective rugby from Caldy.

Birmingham easily looked the more comfortable causing problems at the breakdown and attacking the channels superbly leading to a 12-3 score with tries from Robert Lewis and Ciaran Moore.

The Caldy pack kept chipping away – Crowe, Salisbury, Sanders and co emulating battering rams in their grind to glory – helping Jack Parker over the line and putting Caldy within touching distance.

The game opened up in the second half.

Caldy were better – more direct and playing on the front foot.

Caldy struck first, Luke Hibberd scoring his long awaited first try for the club and finishing it in style from 50 metres out, celebrating for at least the final 20.

Hayes was once again the creator, squeezing through after sending the defender for a walk and finding the supporting Hibberd with an inch perfect pass.

A Derek Salisbury sinbin saw Caldy struggling and decibels rising in aid of halting the Birmingham heave.

Moseley took advantage with another unstoppable driving maul putting them 17-15 ahead.

Normal service resumed with Salisbury re-entering the field, he and his front row unit – Ted Stagg and Jack Parker – gaining Caldy yards in superior fashion and forcing the Penalty in which Jones scored.

Another successful Oliver Allsopp penalty looked to have clinched the game for Moseley.

But inch by inch, Caldy worked the phases, patiently and effectively. Never giving up on the prize.

The penalty came after a 'do-or-die' scrum against the head, giving Caldy the fairy-tail ending in the sunset to all but confirm survival.
