ON a pleasant morning in Birkenhead Park Hawksbury's Paul Roberts put, what has been for him, a run of fairly mediocre results behind him and took his first win of this session of the Winter Flyers beating Gladstone's Ray Lynch in the final.
To even reach the quarters Roberts had to scrape past last week's winner, Tixall's Nigel Hughes, and then after a relatively easy win over Bob Hodgson of Upton Victory Hall he had to fight back from being 17-20 down to West Kirby's Bill Atkinson in the semi final.
Lynch, trying to win his second title, had two comfortable wins on his way to the final firstly against New Brighton Quarry Vikings Eddie Dutton and then Derek Smith of St Georges.
Lynch took an early lead in the final but Roberts fought back to lead 20-15 and despite a late fight back by Lynch he was able to clinch his win.
The final Tournament of this year between the top sixteen in the points table will be on Sunday, December 17.
Currently the top five in the table are: Anthony O'Neill 42, Joe Edwards 34, Ray Lynch 31, Tommy Walker 30 and Bill Atkinson on 26.
