AFTER missing the last couple of weeks of the Winter Flyers, Tixall's Mick Andrews came back and showed why he has been the most successful player in these tournaments.
On a warm sunny morning in Birkenhead Park he came through a series of difficult games before beating New Brighton Quarry Viking's John Cosgrove in the final.
In the quarter finals, Andrews had a good game against the Magazine's Andy Buchanan.
He then showed superb form in beating your correspondent, West Kirby's Bill Atkinson.
Cosgrove came through against St George's Derek Smith before being a little too good on the day for New Brighton Queens Royal's Colin Saville.
It was good to see Colin playing this time, rather than just being the organiser.
In the final Andrews raced into a commanding 13-05 lead.
A very determined Cosgrove bravely fought back.
But, it was all for nothing.
He could not quite close the gap, which meant Andrews held on to take a 21-16 win and the first prize.
Results:
Quarter Finals: C. Saville 21, D.
Alcock 09; J. Cosgrove 21, D. Smith 12; M. Andrews 21, A. Buchanan 13; W. Atkinson 21, T. Walker 10.
