Ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson has come under fire after describing the guilty verdict for Donald Trump as a “mob-style hit job” and claiming it will make his presidency win “more likely, not less.”

Johnson took to the Daily Mail to write his opinion on Trump’s verdict after a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying business records in a bid to illegally influence the 2016 presidential election using hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels who had previously shared they pair had sex twice.

Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes but has insisted that he is “very innocent” claiming the evidence was “rigged”.

Writing in the Daily Mail, the former PM said: “This was no ordinary political assassination. This was a machine-gun mob-style hit-job on Trump.”

Johnson added: “The American people have looked at this case, and in spite of all the portentous claims about its HISTORIC importance, they have concluded that it was, by and large, a load of stunted-up old nonsense.”

He added: “The vast mass of American voters could see what I believe was really happening: that the liberal elites were just appalled at Trump’s continuing popularity and his ability to connect with voters – and they were using anything they could find to derail his campaign.

“If you look dispassionately at his time in office, both on the domestic and international front, it was far more successful than his Left-wing critics allow. They should not be using legal tricks like this to prevent him from receiving the judgment that really matters – the verdict of the people.

“Whatever they may claim now, that is exactly what his opponents were hoping these cases would achieve. More fool them.”

“By pursuing these cases, they have helped to make his victory more likely, not less.”

Johnson's words in the Daily Mail has seen mixed responses as one X, formerly Twitter, user described the article as “a pathetic take.”

However, others agreed with the former PM’s stance, as one follower commented: “Agreed and the same happened to you!”

While another added: “He’s going to walk the election in November now. He was already ahead and now the Democrats have directly into his ‘They’re all against me, therefore you too’ narrative.”
