THE winners of a Wirral council competition to find ways of turning leftovers into meals have had their recipes published.

The ‘Love Your Leftovers’ competition aimed to inspire home cooks and budding chefs alike to come up with some delicious recipes that turn everyday leftovers into meals.

The six winning recipes have now been published as recipe cards which are being distributed across the borough.

A launch event at Wallasey Town Hall saw local chef Anthony Zausmer recreate his winning ‘Scouse Meatballs’ recipe for the other winners, along with Councillor Brian Kenny.

The other winners were Sanday Cameron from Heswall with her recipe for Sunday Lunch Soup; Linda Lovelady from Hoylake with pasta melanesian, Brian Winnington from Bromborough with chow mein stir fry; Upton-based Ema Boddison's beef stew and Lynne Hunt from Birkenhead with spicy lamb shanks.

The winning recipes were those judged to have made the best use of leftover ingredients or those which could be prepared in batches.

Cllr Brian Kenny, Wirral council’s cabinet member for Environment, said: “It was a pleasure to be asked to take part in this event, and of course to sample our competition winners’ recipes.

"The recipes are a great money-saving tip for using up leftover meat and vegetables, and I would recommend everyone picks up a copy and tries it for themselves.”

As well as seeing their creations in print, the six winners also won a Gourmet Farmer and Chef Night with farmer Andrew Pimbley and London Carriage Works chef, Bernadette Bennett, at Claremont Farm.
