HUNDREDS of women and girls turned out in their finery on Thursday for the annual Neston Ladies’ Day.
The historic event, which dates back to 1814, saw more than 200 children walking through the village alongside members of the Neston Female Society.
As the highlight of the South Wirral calendar, local people lined the streets to watch as the procession made their way to St Mary and St Helen’s Church for their service.
The Society has organised the event on the first Thursday of June every year apart from the war years.
Starting at the Malt Shovel pub, the parade was led by the Scots Guards, while the women and children followed carrying white staves which were garlanded with flowers and ribbons.
Also attending in the event was Cllr Eleanor Johnson, chairman of Cheshire West and Chester Council, in her role as Lord Mayor of Chester.
The Mayor of Neston, Cllr Martin Barker, members of the local clergy and many other local dignitaries were also present.
Local resident Christine Joes, who was among those lining the route, said: “I come to the event every year because I love the whole community aspect to it. Everybody looks forward to it and it’s always a lovely day. The traditional element to it all is great and I hope it continues for many years.”
