Drink-drivers are in the sights of police officers during a newly-launched summer crackdown.
More than 100,000 motorists are likely to be stopped this month as officers are urged to be on high alert.
Police are not only looking for those who have had too much alcohol, but also drivers whose abilities are impaired by drugs.
Chief Constable Phil Gormley, of the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), said roadside checks will take place at "all times of the day and night, and on all types of road".
"This means that if you drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs there is a good chance you will be stopped and tested," he added.
In 2009, 17% of people killed on British roads died in a collision involving a drink-driver.
"This tragic and needless waste of human life is totally unacceptable and we will continue to use intelligence to target offenders, as well as carrying out volume testing at the roadside," Mr Gormley added.
"Our message is clear: Have fun, drink if you want to, but don't then get behind the wheel and drive. If you take that risk, you will be caught."
Last year just under 101,000 people were stopped and tested during the 30-day summer campaign, with more than 5,000 testing positive or refusing a test.
Road safety minister Mike Penning warned drivers they face stiff punishment if they are caught over the limit.
