WIRRAL’S tribute to WWI poet Wilfred Owen welcomes a new addition this month.
The Wilfred Owen Story, in Birkenhead, will display the complete exhibition of artist David S W Jones who created dozens of line drawings of Birkenhead Institute where Owen was educated.
To coincide with the unveiling of the historic portfolio, a specially commissioned ceramic replica of the Institute will also be revealed.
The piece, which was made by Cheshire Woman of the Year nominee Janet Holmes, aims to “magically recapture the spirit of the Birkenhead Institute.”
The Wilfred Owen Story opened earlier this year to give local people the chance to learn about the Wirral-born poet who was killed a week before Armistice Day.
Songwriter Dean Johnson, who organised the project, wanted a “one-stop place” where fans could come to view his work.
Dean said: “Hopefully, this will be the start of a long association between Wilfred and the people of Birkenhead. From here, we're going to do a sort of treasure map of places linked with Wilfred in the local area so people can have a full knowledge of his life here.”
The Spirit of Birkenhead Institute will be at the Argyle Street museum from June 14 – July 16. For further information, visit www.wilfredowenstory.com
