THE Globe has an article about Cole Street school closing in today’s newspaper and I am disappointed that so much was incorrect.

The children are not all going to Cathcart Street School, in fact more children are going to Woodchurch Road and almost as many to Christ Church Birkenhead, some are going to Woodlands, The Priory, St Werburgh’s and Castleway.

I am sure that all the schools will try to provide a “flexible and innovative” curriculum and strongly resent the use of the word “more” in your article as it implies that Cole Street was not providing this and that is absolutely not true.

The school will be closed because there was a fall in the number of children in Birkenhead and the building and its footprint was less flexible for a technological future, not because the school community was not providing a “flexible and innovative” curriculum.

You do a disservice to the hardworking staff who have strived, collectively, to ensure that the children enjoy a rich and creative experience of learning.

The community is still greatly traumatised by the closure of the focus of Cole Street so it doesn’t help when the local newspaper prints incorrect facts and implications.

Nina Cullender (retired member of staff) Editor’s note: In our defence, I would point out that the comment “more flexible and innovative” was a direct quote from a councillor who at the time was Wirral's education spokeswoman.

The council’s own report into the closure stated “most” pupils would be expected to transfer to Cathcart Street primary school.
