PRINCE Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, visited Wirral today as guest of honour at West Kirby Sailing Club.
The royal visit was part of the 2011 International One-Metre Class World Championship for model boats.
Prince Philip, who has been a patron of the Model Yachting Association (MYA) since 1956, took a walk around the marine lake, chatted with race participants and watched the boats up-close.
As the royal visitor arrived at the club, hundreds lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the Duke, who will be 90 on June 10.
Chris Riley, West Kirby Commodore, said he was thrilled to host the prestigious event.
Mr Riley said: “A lot of hard work has gone into making today special and we are truly honoured to not only play host to the championship but also to have His Royal Highness visit us.
"It has been a great occasion and we hope we have showcased both the sailing club and West Kirby in the best possible light.”
The week-long championship, which runs until June 4, involves 76 of the world's best radio sailing skippers with 20 countries represented.
Peter Stollery, chairman of the MYA, said: “For us to have Prince Philip visit us and see the work we do is fantastic.
"Our skippers have travelled far and wide for this event so it is extra special for the Duke to be here as well.
"He seemed very interested in the boats and was asking lots of questions about it all.
"We hope he has enjoyed his time with us and we would gladly welcome him back.”
It was West Kirby's second royal visitor in less than a week.
Last Wednesday, the Duke's son, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, joined staff and pupils at the town's residential school and officially opened their new ICT suite.
