A WIRRAL MP wants the Olympic Torch to pass through the borough when it tours the country next year.
Esther McVey, Conservative Member of Parliament for Wirral West, made the suggestion during a meeting of the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, to discuss the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.
Taking place from May 19 to July 27 next year, the 8,000-mile tour will visit, among other places, Chester, Bolton, Liverpool, Carlisle, Bowness-on-Windermere, Isle of Man, Blackpool and Manchester.
Esther asked about the possibility of the torch passing through Wirral and is encouraging Globe readers to support her call.
She said: "It is very important that Wirral, which is steeped in sporting history becomes part of the Olympic Torch Relay.
"It would act as such a great inspiration to the young people of Wirral to get involved in Olympic sports and would cement Wirral as part of the Olympic history."
Esther Continued: "I would also like to encourage people of all ages and abilities to apply to become torch bearers as they too can be part of the Olympic dream."
The search for 8,000 inspirational torch bearers from across UK has begun at ww.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay (see website in related links section below this article). The deadline for nominations is June 29.
