A WIRRAL woman is fulfilling a childhood ambition by taking charge of the family electrical business.

Lisa Evans, from Wallasey, is determined to make her way in a predominantly man's world by taking over her granddad Gerald's company.

The 29-year-old hopes she can use a unique approach to helping women and elderly people feel confident when looking for an electrician.

Lisa has been honing her skills since just six years old when she would go to work with her granddad during holidays and weekends.

And she wants to show other young women that the industry is not just for their male counterparts.

Lisa said: "I knew since I was a child I was going to be an electrician. It didn't go down too well when I was at West Kirby Grammar because everyone else had dreams of becoming doctors or lawyers, and there was me wanting to be a spark!"

Inspired by her granddad, Lisa pursued her passion and beat more than 300 people to secure a coveted apprenticeship with Wirral Council – becoming the only female on her day release college course.

And after a short stint working in Manchester, she returned to her home-town five years ago to start G Evans Electrical back up.

Lisa said: "My granddad was chuffed to bits when I achieved the highest score for my apprenticeship scheme.

"When I came back to Wallasey he was very ill and I knew that was the perfect time to restart the business and make him proud.

"I didn't know where to start, but a friend put me in touch with Wirral Biz. I completed a business course which included marketing your company, accounts, legal matters and much more.

"It was really helpful and I've been trading for two months and the business is going really well.

"I hope it encourages other women to have the confidence to go for their ambition even if it isn't the usual career path."
