A decision over the leadership of Wirral Council is expected to be made this morning.
Liberal Democrat members of the authority met on Tuesday night to decide whether to continue their coalition with the Conservatives or to opt for an alternative arrangement.
New group leader Cllr Tom Harney said he will make an announcement before noon today.
The Lib Dems form part of a coalition administration with Conservatives, but lost four seats after the local elections on May 5.
With 30 seats, Labour is now the leading political group and the Lib Dems will either continue in their Tory coalition, change allegiance or decide to opt for neither party and allow Labour to form a minority administration.
