Colleagues of Peter Caine who was stabbed to death in the early hours of yesterday have paid tribute to a man who would "always put a smile on people's faces."
Peter had worked as a volunteer at Wirral Council for Voluntary Service at its offices in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, for five years.
He died on Thursday morning after being stabbed during an incident in Market Street, Birkenhead.
A 28-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody.
Colleagues say that during his time with the CVS, Peter, who was aged 27, worked as a mentor and was always a friendly face in the office.
He was also well-known and liked by charities associated with the organisation.
Adam Woodcock, development and funding officer for Wirral CVS, told the Globe today: “Peter lifted the atmosphere of the place.
“He was somebody dedicated to the volunteer role and was in the process of trying to gain his 100-hour volunteer certificate.
"He always put a smile on the faces of his colleagues.
“He’d been through a lot of difficult challenges in his life, but had turned things around and was improving his chances.
“He was looking for any job that he could get and was making real efforts to get into the world of work.
“He was a unique character, well-liked by all the staff will be very much missed.”
Mr Caine was originally from Cumbria but had lived in Birkenhead for many years.
His next of kin have been traced and informed of the death.
Asked if there were any plans for a permanent memorial to Peter, Adam replied: “Because Peter did not have any family locally, we’re waiting to see whether they are going to do anything as a permanent tribute.
“If they don’t, it is possible we will create some kind of tribute in our office.”
