A new memorial honouring Wirral's fallen who died in action post-1945 is to be set up in Hamilton Square.

The monument will carry the 17 names of soldiers, sailors and airmen who died in confilcts in the Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The local authority is in consultation with the War Graves Commission and it is expected the memorial will be in place before Remembrance Sunday services in November.

Council leader Jeff Green explained the monument will also hold the names of Wirral armed services personnel that have never been inscribed on the borough's war memorials.

The missing names include 550 Great War dead, 1,100 who lost their lives in World War II and eleven soldiers killed in the Boer Wars.

A new plaque in honour of the borough's 24 holders of the Victoria Cross or George Cross also will be introduced in the Square.

Councillor Green said: "It is very important that all the people of Wirral who have given their lives in the service of their country are properly remembered.

"The post-1945 names are currently on the memorial at Grange Hill (West Kirby) and a plaque in Wallasey Town Hall.

"We will be leaving those in place and all the names of those remembered will be placed on the new memorial in the Square.

"We felt it was right to have a memorial alongside the main Cenotaph, which is where the borough's official civic act of Remembrance is held each year."
