A WOMAN whose son was attacked in a Wirral park has launched a petition calling for the installation of security cameras and street lighting.
Zara Richardson’s son was left with black eyes and a broken nose and his friend was also injured after they were attacked by teenagers as they walked through Central Park in Liscard.
Her son, who asked us not publish his name, will be in hospital on Monday for an operation to repair his nose.
The attack has made him too frightened to return to the park.
Zara has launched an online petition and distributed copies to nearby pubs and schools.
She told the Globe: “In just one week, I’ve had more than 370 signatures.
"I’m going to keep this going until everyone in Wallasey has signed it. Everybody I talk to agrees that there is a problem.
“My son won’t go through this park at all now. They were attacked by two people, believed to be aged about 19, dressed in black and hoodies.
"Unfortunately my son got the brunt of it. I came home to a pool of blood on the kitchen floor."
She added: “My eight-year-old daughter, Hope, witnessed it.
"She heard the noise and came downstairs shaking.
"It’s not just about what happened to those who are attacked, it’s about those who have to pick up the pieces afterwards.”
But a council spokesman said there were no plans to install CCTV in the park, adding that it was looking into the issue of lighting.
Police say they are investigating the incident.
There are ten lights surrounding the lake which presently are not working.
Zara said: “Wirral Council’s motto is ‘Making Wirral a safe place to live, work and visit’.
“If that’s the case, why aren’t they making this park and other parks safer for people to visit? We have students who come to Wirral in the summer and they are not allowed to come near this park.”
“This is the first week I’ve started this petition, so I’m still researching and have been in touch with Wirral’s Cultural Services department, which deals with the park’s lighting, and they are going to get back to me.
“If more people reported these incidents, it may help us to persuade the council to get the problem sorted out.”
