THIS year sees the 100th playing of the Cheshire Amateur Cup and former winners Stork were unlucky 2-1 losers to fellow Carlsberg West Cheshire League club Shell in Saturday's second round ties.

Stork fell behind to two Ian Wilkinson goals and, although Tony Taylor reduced the arrears, they pressed forward strongly without reward (writes Ray Condliffe).

Newton had Jamie Griffiths, Steve Craven and Matt Forshaw on target as they came from behind to post a 3-1 success at Warrington Borough, while Tony Amer, 2, Graham Ellison, 2, and Nick Wetton netted for Ashville in their 5-0 win over visiting Cheadle Hulme.

Hosts Mersey Royal slumped to a disappointing 2-0 extra time defeat at the hands of Lymm and Moreton (Phil Nugent) lost 2-1 at Alsager.

Second Division New Brighton charged into the third round with a 7-0 demolition of Mid-Cheshire Division One side Wilmslow with goals from Tim Gilbert, 3, Mick Connors, 2, John Williams and Steve Whittingham.

In Division One, goals from debut boy Alan McDonald and Joe Kearns earned Cammell Lairds maximum points after they had trailed to a Mark Brady opener at Heswall, but struggling Bromborough Pool had no answer to Gary Washington, who netted four times for Vauxhall, who also had John Garnwell on the mark in a 5-1 victory.

Poulton Victoria represented Cheshire FA in the Northern Counties Championships and first-half efforts by twin strikers Nicky Dillon and Simon Lewis gave them a 2-0 victory over Lancashire FA's representatives, Little Hulton United.

In midweek, Vics strengthened their league position with a 3-1 win over Christleton, with goals from Nicky Dillon, 2, and John Lucas. In Division Two, leaders Heswall Reserves fell to their first defeat of the season when they lost 3-2 to Stork Reserves (Greg Allen, Paul Scarisbrook, Tony Williams).

A Robbie Glanvill-inspired injury time goal gave Poulton Victoria Reserves a 2-1 success at Shell Reserves. Mike Saunders and Ray Bentley scored for Cammell Laird Reserves, who twice came from behind to share four goals with Ashville Reserves (Dave McDermott, 2).
