LOCAL MP Stephen Hesford is battling on behalf of a divorcee in distress. He is taking on the Halifax Building Society and the House of Commons in a campaign to get her Hailfax shares.
Mrs A, of Greasby, took out a joint mortgage with her husband but the marriage ended. Society rules say only the first named account holder received 'giveaway' shares. The ex-husband had by this time completely disappeared making himself ineligible for shares.
Mr Hesford took Mrs A's case up with the Hailfax, then tried to raise it in Parliament.
"Incredibly, I was thwarted here too," says the Labour MP. "There must be thousands of women in a similar position."
Mr Hesford vows to fight on. The full saga of the divorcee and Mr Hesford's view of the Hailfax 'money machine' will appear in next week's Globe. Watch this space.
