A REMINDER of the dangers of winter cycling around Neston's lands has been issued by Cheshire County Council.

With the ending of British Summer Time, and reduced daylight hours, bike riders are urged to ensure that they are geared up for the dark days ahead.

In addition to the usual safety checks on tyres, brakes, chain and saddle, cyclists should also make sure their lights and reflectors are in good working order and that they are wearing the right clothing when they take to the road, says County Councillor Ron Carey, Chairman of the County Council's Highways Sub-committee.

"It is a fact that the more visible cyclists can make themselves, the less the chance of them being involved in an accident," said County Councillor Carey. "It has been said many times before but it is always worth repeating if it can help prevent just one tragedy."

Riders are advised to wear light coloured clothing at least; better still, a 'Sam Browne' belt or an armband made of a material that is both fluorescent and reflective. And, of course, a helmet.
