COURAGEOUS daredevil cyclist, 77-year-old Doug Phillips, has issued a challenge to fellow senior cyclists after breaking what he believes to be a World record for his age.
Pensby pensioner Doug climbed the one-mile Hope Mountain, near Wrexham in North Wales. Hope Mountain has the steepest gradient of one in three-and-a-half, and an average gradient of one in six.
Doug lost two minutes after a heavy fall but he battled on to finish in a superb time of 17 minutes. He missed the veterans' prize by just one second, won by Clive Walmsley, recent winner of the World Masters Track Championship.
Doug's other cycling exploits have seen him tackle the Horseshoe Pass, North Wales, all in aid of charity. Doug is a martial arts instructor, teaching karate kids of all ages.
If you are aged 77 plus, and think you can beat Doug's time, he would love to hear from you! Phone him on 648-4322.
The fastest time was recorded by 16-year-old Steve Cummins in a record time of seven minutes, 20 seconds. Steve recently won the 10-mile Junior British Championship.
