Carlsberg West Cheshire League round-up by Ray Condliffe
REIGNING champions Poulton Victoria served a warning to all potential title contenders by inflicting a dent in Ashville's unbeaten league record on Saturday. Nicky Dillon's penalty and a strike by Dave Galloway gave Vics a 2-0 derby success over Ashville, who missed a penalty.
Stork have not lost in the league since the opening day and Alan Cline enabled them to gain maximum points in their home encounter with Heswall, scoring the game's only goal with two minutes remaining.
Also at Green Lane, Mersey Royal and Cammell Laird shared the spoils following a 2-2 draw. Youngster Stuart Watterson again produced the goods for Lairds, netting twice, while Neil Young and Dave Carrington replied for Mersey Royal.
Despite scoring three for the first time this season, table trailers Moreton still seek their first win of the season. Lee Griffiths, 2, and Eric Woodward scored at Blacon Youth Club, but replies by Dale Edwards, 2, Paul Finch, Les Jon and Kelvin Roderick took the hosts to a 5-3 success.
Bromborough Pool lie one place off the bottom and on Saturday went down to a 2-0 defeat at Christleton (Graham Jones, Robbie Lyth).
In the Wirral Amateur Cup, Heswall Reserves turned the tables on holders Mallaby, who had defeated them at last season's semi-final stage. Experienced campaigners Keith Rooney and Ken Gore were Heswall's marksmen in a 2-0 victory.
In the same competition, West Kirby slumped to a disastrous 6-0 reversal at Castrol Social, Tony Livens firing a hat-trick assisted by Stu Maunders, John Farrell and John Bowles.
Mick Connors continued in his rich scoring vein when recording a double as New Brighton overcame Manor Athletic 4-1, with other goals from Phil Parkhill and Steve Whittingham.
In Division Two, Stork Reserves took over pole position following a 3-0 win at Capenhurst Reserves. Ian Hopwood, Greg Allen and Paul Scarisbrook were on target.
Robbie Glanvill, Tony Walters and Paul Haddock were Poulton Victoria Reserves' marksmen in a 3-1 victory over Christleton Reserves.
Steve Griffiths netted twice as Bromborough Pool Reserves picked up a useful point with a late equaliser at Vauxhall Reserves (Kevin Coles, Lee Eaton), while Iggy McGwaa, 2, and John Brunt helped Mersey Royal Reserves to a 3-2 victory at Upton AA (Matt Jones, Darryl Moss).
