NEW BRIGHTON-based Tulip International announced yesterday there is now the possibility of staying in Wirral.
The Globe believes the proposed site to be in Bromborough, the site earmarked by Wirral Council. Tulip had planned to move to a greenfield site in Northamptonshire, with the loss of 450 jobs at New Brighton and Moreton.
Unions and management have been involved in intensive talks for three months to keep Tulip in Wirral, with new flexible working conditions at a new factory in the area.
On the strength of these agreements, the board of Tulip International has given conditional approval to siting the new factory in Wirral.
"This is dependent on the successful outcome of discussion with local agencies on the issues of assistance and potential sites," said a spokesman for Tulip.
Employees expected to know their fate on November 25, following a board meeting. The battle is to keep Tulip in Wirral, while realising that the New Brighton factory has to close.
Union spokesman Bernadette Mooney gave a cautious welcome to the news that Tulip plans to stay.
"It will depend on grants and things. The march on Saturday goes ahead from Elleray Park at 12 noon, through Liscard to St Joseph's in Poulton."
