From B. Smith, The Piecrust Cafe:-

SEVERAL years ago we were informed that the waste from our cafe would be collected in 'orange bags'. This system, which was costing less than £100 per year (two bags per week) was very satisfactory to us until February of this year when we were informed that it no longer existed and we were to be issued with a Wheelie Bin at a slightly increased cost.

Gradually, over the following six/seven months, the costs inceased to £250 with yet another possible increase this month.

I regard a rise from £100 to £320 per year well above the recognised 'cost of living' increase. At this time I was also informed that many premises, including cafe's, were still using orange bags, but only when they had no reasonable access. Why should we be penalised for having a back door to the shop to the sum of £220 per year? We are now aware that several busineses regardless of access still use the orange bags.

A UK Waste representative assured me that the whole matter would be investigated. But as yet I have had no reply. As a very small business struggling in a declining road, we can not be expected to survive with increased costs such as this, together with £1,400 a year rates.

We would be obliged if someone could explain the situation. This situation is unacceptable. I cannot see how anyone can justify the extortionate rise in costs without an explanation which borders on the bounds of reason - or good manners.
