From Lucy Jolley, Researcher:-I AM researching a Channel Four documentary programme which looks at the rise of 'junk' food in the first half of the 20th century. Between the wars snacking became a national pastime, literally hundreds of new food products flooded the market.
Cadbury's alone brought out 189 new lines including Flakes, Fruit & Nut, Creme Eggs and Milk Tray. In 1920 Frank Smith launched the first crisps and in 1922 Thomas Wall started selling ice-creams from tricycles with the famous slogan 'Stop me and buy one'. This proliferation of junk food created new problems - some developed passions and obsessions for particular food, others became overweight and tried dieting, and others replaced regular meals with full time snacking. If you were a chocoholic in the first half of the century, were addicted to crisps or ice creams or had a passion for a particular food then please write to me.
