PAUL Lacy hit the all-important goal as Carlsberg West Cheshire League club Poulton Victoria progressed to the FA Carlsberg Vase third round with a 1-0 success at North West Counties League club Warrington Town.
Playing on a pitch below the standard they are accustomed to in their own league, Vics had to forsake their normal free flowing style to grind out an excellent and well deserved victory, the goal coming in the 41st minute.
Meanwhile, in Division One, Heswall paraded two new signings and took a first minute lead against second placed Vauxhall through a Dave Smith header, but Gary Jones soon hit back for the visitors, who then had Paul Ford sent off in the 20th minute of the 1-1 draw.
Keeping a clean sheet for the first time in 10 outings, Cammell Laird earned three points thanks to a Mike Saunders goal against visiting Mond Rangers. Newton had Jamie Griffiths, Steve Fowie and Steve Craven on target as they picked up their third league win of the campaign with a 3-1 victory over Bromborough Pool.
Mersey Royal returned from Christleton with a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw, but Moreton slipped to a narrow defeat, going down 1-0 to Capenhurst (Mick Collins).
There was a double bill of table topping clashes in Division Two, with leaders Stork Reserves recording a superb 4-0 success over New Brighton. Paul Scarisbrook, 2, Duncan Burrows and Ben McHugh were on target.
And champions Heswall Reserves won an entertaining contest at Vauxhall Reserves by the odd goal in five, thanks to a Ken Gore double plus one from Danny Croxton. Neil Coles and Dave McKenna hit the mark for the hosts.
With both sides down to 10 men, Manor Athletic (Peter McNay, 2, Alan Newton, Gary Carvell, Stuart Maddocks) struck three times in the last five minutes to overcome Shell Reserves 5-4. Shell's marksmen were Wayne Foden (hat-trick) and Nick Kennedy.
Poulton Victoria Reserves occupy second spot thanks to two wins in four days over Capenhurst Reserves. Saturday's 7-2 victory saw Colin Hawitt, 2, Robbie Glanvill, Scott Taylor, Paul Haddock, Carl Howell and Paul Atherton on target. Scorers in the midweek 4-1 success were Paul Haddock, 2, Tony Waters and Colin Hawitt.
John Paul Stanhope scored for Ashville Reserves in a 1-1 draw with visiting West Kirby, who replied through Mark Chandler. Cammell Laird Reserves extended their unbeaten run to seven games after a 3-1 win at Mersey Royal Reserves, with John Edwards, Dave McKella and Ian Fitzsimmons on target.
