ON a high after recording two straight victories for the first time this season in the Nationwide League Division One, Tranmere Rovers face a stern test this Saturday when they travel to the North East to make their debut in Sunderland's magnificent new 50,000 capacity all-seater Stadium of Light (kick-off 3pm).
Following the 1-2 home defeat by Port Vale, Rovers' Player-manager John Aldridge and his players set themselves a secret target which they hope will propel them up the Division One table.
It's no coincidence Tranmere have started winning since the 'Gunslinger' recalled himself to the side. Mr Aldridge may be 39, but he still knows where the goal is and his presence on the field seems to inspire those around him.
His scoring appearance in Saturday's home win over Stoke City was the first time he has ever played alongside David Kelly in a competitive match. It was always Aldridge or Kelly alongside Tony Cascarino or Niall Quinn for the Republic of Ireland.
Skipper and centre-half John McGreal is a major doubt with a knee problem for Saturday's date at Peter Reid's Sunderland, relegated last season.
Despite their struggling position so far this season, Tranmere are the fifth highest scoring side in Division One.
Rovers Reserves face Birmingham City Reserves at Prenton Park this evening (November 26, 7pm).
