RESIDENTS and councillors get some 'disappointing' news tomorrow. The Environmental Agency has confirmed UK Waste Management can dump 'special wastes' at Bromborough Dock Landfill site, despite objections from Wirral Council. Residents fear asbestos will be in the special waste.

Wirral's planning committee will be told by Director of planning Jim Wilkie that the response from the Environmental Agency is disappointing but reflects the limited influence external consultees have on such licensing matters.

The disappointment is shared by local MP Ben Chapman, who also responded to residents' complaints about the tip.

"I have had complaints from residents about the proposed extension of the licence and raised these fears with UK Waste Management, The Environment Agency and ministers.

"Clearly the decision will disappoint residents. I have, however, talked to the company. They are willing to respond to concerns locally. They are offering to discuss how best they can address those concerns and are proposing to restrict the times of special waste deliveries.

"They are in agreement that strict monitoring must be enforced," says Mr Chapman, who promises to keep pressure on both the company and ministers. He will be holding a meeting with residents and seeing if Wirral Council can provide some screening between the tip and nearby homes.
