SUBARU 555 World Rally Championship drive with Colin McRae only became a local story for me after talking to Team Director Dave Richards, writes Globe Motoring Editor Robin Bird.

Surrounded by the world's media at the RAC Network Q press conference, I asked the rather 'naff' question: "Where do you come from Dave?"

Now it was not so naff after all. For the most powerful man behind world rallying comes from Wirral and was educated at Birkenhead School.

"I come from a town called Hoylake in the North West of England," he replied to the gathered journalists and the Japanese scribes started writing it all down!

Over the past decade, Prodrive has become synonymous with success in rallying and Touring Cars while a Prodrive debut in F1 is rumoured.

So, the local boy does good headline is an inspiration to all young budding motor engineers in Wirral. You, too, can win the World Rally Championship and become a successful business person with a squadron of 555 helicopters!
