TWO apprentices from Wirral have been served top awards in hotel catering and hospitality.

Kate Smith, of Bebington, and Michael Sheldon, of Prenton, got their just desserts as the region's Students of the Year Awards during a celebration lunch at Hoole Hall Hotel.

The Lord Mayor of Chester joined family and guests to present the awards for catering and hospitality in the CEWTEC apprentice scheme, known as CHAS.

CHAS caters for about 50 places from 350 would-be apprentices. Due to the high standards, two Students of the Year awards were made. Kate had her hotel receptionist skills recognised at the Moat House, Chester. Michael was rewarded for his food service skills at Crabwall Manor.

Other awards went to Moat House, Chester, as Establishment of the Year for commitment to apprentices. Michael Trulove was judged Mentor of the Year.
