Tranmere Rovers 1, Ipswich Town 1
Attendance: 5,720
OUT of sorts Tranmere rescued a late point, but had a heavy price to pay when Lee Jones was stretchered off with knee ligament damage sustained in scoring the equaliser (writes Steve Hunter).
Rovers were booed off by their fans for a poor first-half display. Non-existent marking saw them go a goal down. Ipswich striker David Johnson - the instigator of previous club Bury's defeat of Tranmere earlier this season - headed home after being left totally unguarded in the six yard box.
In the second half, Player-manager John Aldridge came off the bench to telling effect and rattled the Ipswich defence. Rovers equalised 17 minutes from time, Alan Morgan's superb through ball finding Lee Jones who steered the ball past Wright - but at a huge personal price.
Tranmere goalkeeper Steve Simonsen made two great saves to deny Johnson before winger John Morrissey missed a wonderful opportunity to grab a last-gasp winner for Rovers. But his shot, in injury time, was fired well wide of the target, with the goal at the player's mercy.
Tranmere Rovers: Simonsen, Stevens (sub: Aldridge, 57 minutes), Thompson, McGreal, Challinor, Irons, Morrissey, Mellon, Kelly, O'Brien, Lee Jones (sub: Mahon, 73 minutes). Unused sub: Gary Jones.
