FIRST meeting in the Merseyside Boys' Schools Cross Country League was held at Clarke Gardens, Liverpool. Boys from Wirral schools produced some good team and individual performances, with Wirral schools winning all the races.

Year 7 race: 1, Calday 'A' 26 pts; 2, St Anselm's 'A' 16 pts. Individuals: 1, Liam Boyle (Calday); 2, Ben James (Calday); 3, M. Rowland (St Anselm's); 4, James Appleton (Calday); 5, Chris Heseltine (Calday); 7, Jon Culligan (Calday).

Year 8 race: Another win in this race for Calday with St Anselm's again in the runners-up spot, although St Anselm's provided the individual winner in Rory Smith.

Result: 1, Calday 30 pts; 2, St Anselm's 80 pts. Individuals: 1, Rory Smith (St Anselm's); 2, Richard McColl (Calday); 5, Ian Revell (Calday); 6, Trevor Merrick (Calday); 9, Matthew Strange (Calday).

Year 9 race produced a win for St Anselm's, this time with Wirral Grammar School second.

Result: 1, St Anselm's 59 pts; 2, Wirral GS 61 pts. Individuals: 2, Mark Watson (St Anselm's); 3, John Woodward (Wirral GS); 4, Ross Taylor (St Anselm's); 6, David Yarwood (Birkenhead); 8, Mark Rose (Wirral).

In Year 10/11 race, Calday again came out winners ahead of St Anselm's in the team race, although the highest placed finisher from Wirral was Paul May (Bebington HS) in third place.

Result: 1, Calday 46 pts; 2, St Anselm's 63 pts. Individuals: 3, Paul May (Bebington); 4, Andrew Baddeley (Calday GS); 6, Ben Culligan (Calday GS); 7, Julian Gorbet (Calday GS); 9, David Byrne (St Anselm's); 10, James Sutcliffe (St Anselm's).

St Anselm's were the winners of Year 12 race with 55 points. Birkenhead were third on 83 points.
