"ONLY small amounts over the limit" cost two Heswall drink/drive businessmen hefty fines and their licences, causing both considerable hardship.

The convictions come at a time when local MP Ben Chapman has put out a festive message: "Have none for the road! Make this a Christmas and New Year to remember for the right reasons. If you are going to enjoy a drink, leave the car at home. Take a taxi, bus or catch a lift with someone who is not drinking. There is no responsible way of drinking before you intend to drive."

Company director Robert Alfred McLaughlin, aged 41, of Tower Road North, Heswall, was fined £850 after admitting drink driving on the M53.

He was: "only a small amount over after consuming champagne." He was banned for a year.

Rep Richard Andrew Johnson, 44, of Willowbank, Heswall, was caught in a routine check and admitted the offence. Wirral magistrates fined him £450 with a one year ban.
