CHRYSLER has added two new versions of the popular American-built Neon saloon to their UK range, one a value-for-money entry-level model and the other a sporting top-of-the range version.

The two new additions broaden the Neon range to seven models lining up alongside a third new addition to the Neon range, the recently-introduced 2.0 GLX version, which provides the 'wood and leather' comfort of a luxury model with the space and performance of a 2.0-litre executive car.

All three Neons look set to bring even more success to the fast-growing Chrysler Jeep business in the UK, which this month celebrated its 50,000th new vehicle sale in just over five years. Since the Neon's launch in this country two years ago, over 6,500 Neons have been sold, more than any other country in Europe, a result which has helped the UK to become Chrysler's top-selling market in Europe in 1997.

'At home' in the USA, the four-door Neon is built at Chrysler's Belvidere Plant in Illinois at a rate of over 1,000 a day, and the one millionth Neon was delivered to a customer in April this year.

With an on-the-road price of just £11,995 and an insurance group rating of just Group 7e, the new entry level Neon 1.8LE combines extremely low cost motoring with levels of luxury and standard equipment normally on much larger, more expensive cars.

Fitted with a new 1.8-litre version of the 16-valve single overhead cam engine fitted to the rest of the Neon range, the 1.8LE comes fitted with the same extensive standard equipment package seen on other Neons, with the exception of anti-lock brakes and air conditioning.

The new smaller bore 1796 cc SOHC engine produces 114 bhp and 111 lb ft of torque and is mated to a standard five speed manual transmission. This powertrain gives the 1.8LE a potential top speed of 116 mph and provides acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just over 10.5 seconds.

As with all Neons sold in the UK, standard equipment includes power assisted steering, remote control central locking, electric front windows, immobiliser, electrically-operated folding door mirrors, tilt/adjustable steering column, an RDS/EON radio cassette player, driver and passenger airbags and a height-adjustable driver's seat. Fuel economy figures on the 1.8LE are equally impressive. On the extra urban cycle it is capable of 42 miles per gallon.

One of the key features of the Neon since day one has been its 'fun to drive' factor. Crisp responsive steering, roll-free handling and a punchy single overhead cam engine all combine to make the stylish four door saloon one of the best driver's cars in its class.

Now Chrysler is moving up a gear with a special, unique-to-Europe sports version, offering more value for the enthusiastic driver.

The new Neon 2.0CS which features a host of distinctive new touches, brings a little extra performance and a distinctive new sporting look to the range, and goes on sale with an on-the-road price of £15,495.

Externally, the CS is different from any other Neon. The car is only available in metallic platinum silver colour finish, which is not available on any other Neon model. This is enhanced by a new front spoiler with integrated fog lamps, a 'power bulge' on the bonnet, a unique rear spoiler and extended wheel arch covers.

Driver and passenger comfort is aided by the fitment of standard air conditioning and safety is enhanced by the inclusion of anti-lock braking. The Neon 2.0CS has an insurance rating of just Group 9e.

The third new Neon to join the UK range is the 2.0GLX version. With an on-the-road price of just £14,995, this new luxury version has Bridge of Weir leather seat facings, burr walnut inlays on the doors and transmission surround (on the automatic version), stainless steel kick plates and alloy wheels.

This is in addition to the air conditioning, anti-lock brakes and airbags for both driver and passenger, which are found as standard on the Neon 2.0LX on which it is based. Automatic transmission is available as a no-cost option, something which has proved extremely popular on the Neon range so far.

"The exceptional value for money, modest running costs, low insurance groupings and generous equipment levels of the Neon range have really struck a chord with British motorists. These two new models, and the recently-introduced 2.0GLX version, offer more of that winning formula and look set to appeal to even more motorists in this country," said Richard Mackay, Managing Director of Chrysler Jeep Imports UK.

"But in addition to offering fantastic value for money, Neon attracts buyers who want something a little different. Its distinctive, friendly styling and fun-to-drive factor appeals to buyers right across the spectrum, from the young to the young at heart," said Mackay.

Like all of Chrysler Jeep's UK range, these new Neons come with one of the more comprehensive warranty packages available on any new car. There is a standard three year/60,000 mile mechanical warranty, six year anti-corrosion cover and three years roadside assistance and this can be extended to five years cover with unlimited mileage for a relatively low cost.
