MAY 1998's new car registrations rose 1.7 per cent, according to figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

May 1998's registrations totalled 172,851, up on the May 1997 figure of 169,886.

British-built cars accounted for 33.4 per cent of all new cars registered, compared with 36.5 per cent in May 1997.
