NINETY years and one day later, the laying of the foundation stone of Prenton United Reformed Church is to be celebrated this Saturday with a June Jamboree.
The event is to raise much-needed funds for the upkeep of the fine building on the corner of Storeton Road and Prenton Road West.
Emphasis throughout the day will be on fun. Attractions include a mock coconut shy, football tombola, rolling pennies, hotdog stall and bouncy castle, as well as stalls offering home-made cakes, baby clothes, toys, flowers and so on for sale.
And for those who prefer something different, they can rest in the Kinghorn Tea Rooms and listen to light music on the piano.
Some of the children from the present Sunday School will greet the Mayor of Wirral, Coun Mrs Margaret Green, who opens the event at 2pm. Admission is 25p with two accompanied children under 14 years free.
It was in April, 1888, that the Congregational Denomination was finally adopted at the weekly religious meeting held in the bowls pavilion.
The foundation stone of the present church was laid by Mrs Lever, later to become Lady Leverhulme, on June 12, 1908.
