From M. Schulze:-
RECENTLY after an absence of several years I made the mistake of visiting Rhyl.
Despite the amount of money that has been spent on new attractions and the re-building of the promenade I feel that the town is dying and everybody is blissfully unaware of it. The only thing that seems to support this seaside resort are the endless number of 'amusement' arcades or gaming arcades which give the resort a rather tacky image.
I believe the only reason that these arcades enjoy a certain amount of popularity is that day trippers or tourists are bored and have nothing better to do but to spend their cash in bars or arcades.
The artists impression of the proposed New Brighton rejuvenation is in my opinion fantastic and deserves all the support from the people of Wirral, and the Government. But, I feel that the council and other authorities must have the guts to stand up against big business (whose support will be needed) and control the number of amusement arcades and other tacky sideshows and stalls.
The Wirral Dome project looks up-market and I hope it will get the go-ahead and for New Brighton to become a family resort and not a haven for lager louts. I am sure that local residents will be opposed to living in another Rhyl.
