Every example of the new Golf range is better value than its equivalent in the previous range when specifications are equalised. More importantly, for the first time in a car of this class, Volkswagen offers the customer a standard of panel fit, body rigidity and overall build quality only found previously in much more expensive luxury cars.
Volkswagen has raised the game for the family car by setting new standards of quality, equipment and available options for a given price, starting at £12,250 'on the road' for the Golf 1.4e three-door powered by a new 1.4-litre, 16 valve 75 bhp engine. Side airbags are standard.
High demand is expected for the five-door 1.6 100 bhp S and SE models and the TDI 90 bhp S.
Volkswagen's Polo range has become even larger with the launch of the small estate and a new GL saloon, plus TDI engine and 1.6-litre 100 bhp automatic versions of both.
Prices are just £460 more than the equivalent saloon and start from £11,995,00 'on the road' for the Polo Estate 1.6-litre 75 bhp L, including Volkswagen's three unlimited mileage warranty. Equipment fitted to the L is more than you'd expect of an entry level model, including driver's airbag, stereo radio/cassette with 4x20 watt output, power assisted steering, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, front and rear head restraints, and height adjustment for the steering column and front seats, are all standard, and the CL added features include more luxurious interior trim, central locking and electric front windows.
Volkswagen has tailored a new GL specification especially for the Polo saloon and estate. It's differentiated from other models in the range by standard 6J x 14 'Solitude' alloy wheels, the same style as those fitted to the Golf Cabriolet Colour Concept.
The Saloon GL is offered with a choice of three engines, 1.6 75 and 100 bhp petrol units and the 1.9 TDI 90 bhp diesel. The Estate GL is available with the two, more powerful engines, with prices ranging from £11,975,00 'on the road' for the Saloon GL, and £14,010,00, for the Estate GL TDI with 90 bhp.
The widely acclaimed and rally proven 1.9-litre TDI Volkswagen engine is now on sale in 90 bhp format in the Polo Saloon and new Estate, and with all three trim levels, with prices from £12,780,00 'on the road.'
Both Saloon and Estate TDI achieve 62 mph in 12.5 seconds, and the Polo is almost unique in being available as a small saloon or estate with a 100 bhp engine, automatic transmission and power steering. The transmission is Volkswagen's four-speed automatic gearbox featuring 'dynamic shift programme.'
