LOCAL runners proved their worth by winning a whole host of events at the Midland Bank sponsored Cross Country League meeting held in Arrowe Park for Year Seven and Eight pupils.

Abigail Lyons, of Weatherhead School, won all three races in the Under-12 girls' age group. Upton Hall Convent emerged as the winning team, with Woodchurch runners-up.

Woodchurch won the Under-13 girls' age group, with Weatherhead - they had Ella Bowen as the leading performer with two wins. There was a victory, too, for Plessington's Nicky Smith.

Birkenhead School's Jonathan Elbay scored three individual victories in the Under-12 boys' event, leading his team to first place. Oldershaw, winners of the second race, were runners-up.

Birkenhead School won the Under-13 boys' event, thanks to the efforts of John-Paul Wylde, who registered two wins. South Wirral High School's Adam Barton pressed Wylde hard and won the second race, to earn his school second place.

Next year's races will take place on the now traditional first three Tuesdays in March.
